Honored by the Queens Interagency
Council on Aging Program

Grace S. Nierenberg, Selfhelp's Senior Vice President of Senior Communities was honored by the Queens Interagency Council on Aging (QICA) on March 23rd. At a gala gathering at the Kew Gardens Community Center, Grace was awarded the Leon VonHolden Advocacy Award for her long time service to the aging community. Councilman John Liu and Bobbie Sackman, Director of Policy for the Council of Senior Centers and Services were honored at the same event with the Rose Krysak Legislative Award.

Our own Stacy Schuchter-Gomez, Social Worker at Fresh Meadows NORC is on the board of QICA and was present along with 20 Selfhelp staff who wanted to be part of this very important ceremony.

For those of you who don't know Grace Nierenberg, Grace has been an important part of Selfhelp's success. Starting as a social work intern some 30 years ago, Grace has helped our organization grow to its present size and gain its stellar reputation. As Senior Vice President of Senior Communities Grace has been the force behind many innovative new programming ideas and has maintained her commitment to community based services with the same intensity today, as when she first began her work here at Selfhelp. The award ceremony was attended by David Weprin, Council Member from Fresh Meadows and Chair of the City Council Finance Committee, Council Member Eric Gioia from Woodside, State Senator Frank Padavan and Congressman Anthony Wiener. State Assemblyman Jimmy Meng also honored Grace with a certificate for her service to the community. Phyllis Tobin, Assistant Vice President for Senior Communities accepted the award on Grace's behalf since she was unable to attend. Phyllis' speech was very moving and caught Grace's spirit with her loving words.
