Selfhelp is one of three New York City agencies that can serve as Guardian for Adult Protective Services clients deemed legally incapacitated and as a result, unable to provide for their personal needs and/or property management. The Guardian's power is limited to those which the court finds necessary. A Guardian is an intensive case manager, a surrogate decision-maker, a coordinator of community services and a money manager. A "Community Guardian" can only serve those who reside at home, not in nursing homes or other facilities. Selfhelp's goal as a Community Guardian is to keep clients comfortably and safely in the community with as much independence as possible.
