Selfhelp is pleased to announce the opening of it’s newest NORC (Naturally Occurring Retirement Community). 1199 Plaza Services/ NORC is located at 2106 First Avenue, New York, NY 10029. NORC is defined as an established housing community that wasn’t specifically built for the elderly, but where many of the residents have aged in place. Many of these older residents now need support services to enable them to continue living in their homes. To qualify, a NORC must have at least 50% of its households headed by a person aged 60 or older. Selfhelp will now be able to provide supportive services to those residents such as; case management/case assistance, health & wellness services, recreation & education services, intergenerational programs and volunteer opportunities. The grand opening event held at the 1199 Plaza Services/NORC on October 25th was a success. Selfhelp was privileged and honored to have Assembly Member Adam Clayton Powell IV, along with Chief of Staff John Rivera of Congressman Charles Rangle's office and State Senator Jose Serrano. Also present were the 1199 Board President, William Dames, and board members, housing management staff, our very own Selfhelp staff, Grace Nierenberg, VP Housing & Senior Centers, Phyllis Tobin, Asst. VP Housing & Senior Centers, Leo Asen, Administrative Director Housing & Senior Centers, Pat O'Connor, VP Planning and Program Development, as well as others who spoke about this great opportunity to serve the community. Raiza Torres, Program Director 1199 Plaza Services/NORC and Betsy Smith, Senior Programs Director, had an opportunity to meet and talk to many seniors and residents in attendance. They shared with them the services that the NORC program will provide and how it will contribute, improve & enhance the quality of life to the seniors and residents. The floor was open to questions, which gave the Selfhelp staff and our distinguished guests an opportunity to hear what some of the needs are. The seniors vocalized how happy they are to have access to professional social services in their community. Selfhelp’s 1199 staff are dedicated workers who are committed and excited to make the newest NORC a secure environment and cheerful place to live. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of our grand opening!
