Words of welcome were extended by Cheryl Gersh, Benjamin Rosenthal's Program Director and greetings on behalf of Selfhelp were extended by Phyllis Tobin, Assistant Vice President of Senior Communities. Grace Meng on behalf of Assemblyman Jimmy Meng, Ellen Young, District Administrator for Council member John C. Liu as well as Council member John C. Liu who congratulated Selfhelp for reaching this milestone year.
Participant testimonials followed. Irving Chipkin of the Selfhelp Benjamin Rosenthal Senior Center addressed how center involvement provides opportunities for socialization, affordable nutritious lunches, independent living, volunteerism, and continued learning. He concluded his remarks with a communal toast to Selfhelp. Ray Joss of the Helen R. Scheuer House spoke about technological innovations that are supporting continued independence for the elderly. Robert Humber of the Martin Lande House spoke about the importance of affordable senior housing and Frances Clay of the Scheuer House of Flushing spoke about how volunteerism as enriched her life. Xian Mein Zheng spoke about how volunteering and living in the Harry and Jeannette Weinberg House has enhanced her life. The formal part of the program concluded with Simon Hsiao of the Selfhelp Latimer Gardens Senior Center speaking about the importance of English as a Second Language (ESL) classes.
Dinner was served and dancing followed. A gala time was had by all.
