On December 14th the Benjamin Rosenthal Senior Center played host to a "Community Conversation" at the request of Christine Quinn, Speaker of the New York City Council. More than 150 people attended the event where they asked questions of the Speaker as well as Council Members John Liu and David Weprin. Our CEO Stuart Kaplan welcomed the Council Members and set the stage for the dialogue. Speaker Quinn has been going to facilities in all five boroughs to hear about the concerns of the local community in preparation for determining how the Council will allocate budget items in the next fiscal year. Seniors from several of Selfhelp’s housing and senior centers, in addition to other community groups attended and participated in the community conversation. The discussion ranged from general concerns about police and community relations to specifics about senior needs for more housing, improved facilities for senior centers, particularly our own Prince Street, transportation specifically the need for Access-a-Ride to take clients over the border into Nassau County for medical appointments and the need for a greater commitment to funding for social adult day services. We were pleased that Selfhelp was selected
as a site for this event, which is testimony
to the good work of our organization. |
