On September 18th, Selfhelp proudly held the dedication of its sixth housing unit, the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Apartments, in Flushing, Queens. Many guests spoke eloquently about Selfhelp and the work it continues to do to support New York’s elderly. Perhaps most moving however, was the speech given by the unit’s first tenant, Yoon Sang Park, who dramatically spotlighted the hope and dignity engendered by affordable housing in New York. Mr. Park’s speech follows.

Good afternoon, ladies, gentlemen and distinguished guests. I am Yoon Sang Park and I want to thank you for this opportunity to tell you about my experience as the first resident of the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Apartments.

On June 3rd, my life changed for the better! Over 4 years ago, my wife, Malim, and I applied for Selfhelp Housing. We feel very fortunate to have been given the chance to live in a safe community with people who have similar interests and lifestyle needs. Had it not been for the generous efforts and donations from the Weinberg Foundation and the Department of Housing and Urban Development, we would still be struggling to get by from month to month. Now, our financial worries have almost completely disappeared, and we have a clean and comfortable home. Every day here is a blessing. There are many opportunities to meet all of the residents like the daily activities and luncheons, which are organized and prepared by Selfhelp.

In experiencing such a drastic improvement of my living situation, my thoughts often turn to the thousands of other senior citizens who were not as fortunate as my wife and I to secure a place in the Weinberg Apartments. I can't emphasize enough how important it is to continue your gallant efforts and to provide assistance for those still in need. On behalf of all the residents here, I would like to convey our deepest gratitude for giving us a new home where we can maintain a comfortable living.
