Stuart Eizenstat to Serve as Honorary Chairman of Project Legacy

We are delighted to report that Ambassador Stuart E. Eizenstat has stepped forward as Honorary Chairman of our Project Legacy Campaign.

Stuart Eizenstat has achieved international standing for his legendary advocacy work on behalf of Holocaust survivors.   As such, there is no one more fitting to serve as our Honorary Chairman. Ambassador Eizenstat served in the Administrations of Presidents Clinton and Carter, playing instrumental roles in international relations including Holocaust negotiations and related matters. He was recently appointed by Secretary of State Clinton to head up Holocaust Affairs for the United States and led the United States’ delegation to the Holocaust Era Assets Conference in Prague in June 2009.

Project Legacy was launched to fulfill the promise made by Selfhelp’s founders:  “to serve as the last surviving relative to victims of the Holocaust.” It is a multi-million dollar initiative to ensure that the last generation of Holocaust survivors can live their remaining years with the supportive services they need and deserve. Two situations have led to the necessity to begin Project Legacy now: the steady growth in the number of Nazi victims approaching Selfhelp for assistance due to advanced age and frailty; and the expected cessation, over the next 5-7 years, of millions of dollars in funding from The Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (the Claims Conference).

You are doing the Lord’s work and I would like to lend my help in any way I can,” Ambassador Eizenstat remarked to Selfhelp’s delegation during a visit to his Washington DC office. We are honored to work with Ambassador Stuart Eizenstat, whose name is synonymous with staunch advocacy on behalf of Holocaust survivors.
